A courtyard hidden behind the kitchen
Past the wine corridor sits a walled garden kept at a permanent early-evening: lanterns, fig trees, and low tables set for tea ceremonies, rare leaf infusions and slow games of backgammon.
- Aged pu-erh and high-mountain oolong brewed tableside by our tea master.
- First-flush Darjeeling flights paired with petit fours from the pastry kitchen.
- Private pavilion for parties of two to six, reserved in two-hour sittings.
- Signature fruit-head preparations — fig, quince and blood orange bases.
- House tobacco-free herbal mixes available on request.
- Heated pavilion seating through winter; blankets and braziers provided.
Reserve the garden pavilion
The pavilion seats eight and carries a modest cover that is fully credited to your table. Garden bookings include a dedicated host and a complimentary tea welcome.
Fortunes made between courses
Some guests come for the dining room and stay for the tables. A chronicle of the evenings that built our reputation — told with the discretion our regulars expect.
The six-hand evening
A quiet Tuesday baccarat session became house legend — six consecutive natural nines, celebrated with a magnum of vintage champagne sent by the floor, on us.
Dinner for the whole room
After a record roulette run, one guest quietly bought dessert for every table in the dining room. The gesture is still talked about by our waiters.
The truffle wager
A friendly bet on a coin flip settled the table’s order — the loser sponsored a white-truffle course for all twelve seats. Nobody really lost.
The winners’ circle letter
A monthly note on closed events, invitation tournaments and cellar openings. Discreet, infrequent, worth reading.
Every settled bill is a ticket
When your evening ends, your receipt may not. Each closed check enters the house draw for compliments announced nightly at midnight.
Registered checks are drawn live in the lounge. Winners receive the compliment to their next visit — or the same night, if fortune moves quickly.
Champagne complement
A chilled bottle delivered to your table on your next reservation.
Chef’s off-menu course
A dish that never reaches the printed menu, plated for your table alone.
Salon upgrade
Move your party into a private salon for the remainder of the evening.
Car home, covered
A chauffeured return anywhere within metropolitan Melbourne.
The room has its own tempo
Live trio jazz until ten, downtempo soul until two, and the soft percussion of chips and coupe glasses until close. Press play on the house recording.
DJ Aurelia Voss
Deep lounge and nu-jazz selections from the resident decks, 22:00 – late.
The Clef Trio
Piano, double bass and brushed drums — standards and requests between courses.
Velvet Sessions
Guest vocalists and a longer first set; salon guests seated first at the rail.
